How to expertly clean artificial turf

Posted by John F. Grant on Jul 17th 2024

Artificial grass (a/k/a turf) in dog parks, dog runs, relief areas-- can really start to stink fast, when a few or a few dozen dogs are using them daily.  Urine, dog poop, fur, hair, feet and slobber--- whew, that stinks!

Eliminating dog odor from artificial turf requires a few specific steps to ensure it stays fresh, odor-free, and safe for your pet. Your guide to becoming a turf odor-eliminating expert:

Daily Maintenance Expert Tips:

  1. Remove Solid Waste:
    • Remove solid waste as soon as possible. This prevents the turf from getting stained and reduces odors.
  2. Rinse with Water:
    • Use a water hose to rinse off any urine and small debris. This helps prevent the buildup of bacteria and keeps the turf smelling fresher.
  3. Mix and Apply Zero Waste USA ODOR ELIMINATOR while the turf is wet. The morning is the best time to apply ODOR ELIMINATOR as it will stay wet longer at lower temperatures. The longer the turf stays wet, the more active the enzymes become. ODOR ELIMINATOR is the most effective enzyme you can use to digest odor causing bacteria. Not a perfume cover-up; instead the active enzymes actually 'eat' the odor causing bacteria.
  4. Allow to dry naturally. Do NOT rinse.  Immediately safe for pets.

Additional Tips:

  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use bleach or other harsh chemicals as they can damage the turf fibers and be harmful to pets. Use an approved, mild, pet safe product like Zero Waste USA's  ODOR ELIMINATOR.
  • Pet-safe Products: Always opt for pet-safe cleaning products to ensure your dog’s safety.
  • Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the turf for any signs of wear and tear, and repair any damaged areas promptly.

By following these EXPERT steps, you can keep your dog turf clean, safe, and odor-free.
